What is Art?

Art is a very diverse subject matter due to how it encompasses a variety of different activities. However, a more specific definition can be found by narrowing “art” down to the visual arts. The visual arts, like it says in the name, is primarily focused on the visual aspect when it comes to the creation/final product of art.

According to visual arts, art is a visual representation of an artist's idea/concept that is done through various means. An artist can express themselves through a multitude of mediums such as painting, drawing, photography, collages, etc. Through these mediums an artist is able to convey their imagination with creative skills that they have acquired over time.

 What is Design?

Design is a part of art that is more focused on planning the visual aspects of an artwork. More specifically, design is done with planning instead of just going straight into working on the final product.

Design is a work that is done with the intention of being visually appealing to a group or audience of people. There are many elements of design that are considered in order for the work to be appealing to the target audience. Some of these elements when it comes to artistic work include composition, color, space, form, etc.

Design is a very important aspect in the creation of art as it forms a plan that results in a better overall final product. This final product is more visually appealing as it considers various elements that make it more intentional and work together better.

What is Craft?

A craft is an activity or occupation that is done with particular skills. More specifically, these skills are acquired overtime as a person is able to slowly master their craft.

In the artistic world there are a variety of different crafts that people have. For example, a person's craft can be painting, pottery, drawing, etc. These crafts require manual labor from the artist and done well due to the artist's mastery at that particular craft. Typically, crafts are also an occupation, however they can also be side activities that are not the main source of income for a person.

Crafts are honed over time and require large amounts of skill in order to get them done well. Therefore, people with crafts are very respectable due to how much effort and passion they put into their work.

What is the Relationship Between Creativity & Knowledge?

Creativity and knowledge are both very different in terms of how they are used in the creation of things. Therefore, it seems that they exist separately and do not really mix together at all. However, these two actually are used together quite frequently in the creation of different ideas, concepts, designs, etc. Therefore, it is important to highlight the relationship between creativity and knowledge.

Creativity is used when trying to think outside of the box. More specifically, it is used when someone is trying to think of an original idea with their imagination. Creativity by itself does not require any previous information or understanding beforehand as it relies on an individual’s own limits.

Knowledge is gained from experiences or from the teachings of others. Knowledge is information/facts that can be used in order to better understand different topics or subjects. Knowledge is also recognized and accepted as the truth when people acquire it, whether that be through personal experience or through teachings.

Despite their differences creativity and knowledge have a relationship due to the benefits that both provide when making art. For example, when making a design there is knowledge required in order to figure out what design aspects appeal to people the most; like composition, color palettes, technique, etc. However, creativity is also used in this process as it is up to the artists themselves to come up with concepts or design ideas with their own imagination. Although they rely on knowledge to understand what works well in a design, they still use creativity as their process will result in their own original artwork.
